Hi I’m Dr. Sarah Castillo and I’m the Director of the Sports Psychology Program at National University. I get questions all the time about the idea of: “How do you let go and how do you keep from being frustrated on the course?” Well, really the answer is, you don’t. Remember that frustration takes energy and focus to maintain, and the more energy you’re directing at the frustration from the last shot, the less energy and focus you have for the next shot.

Even the best players get frustrated, there’s no getting around it. But, you’ll notice, that the time that they stay frustrated is incredibly short. Most times, they’re frustrated at the shot they just made, but by the time they’re standing over the ball again, it’s gone. They’re completely focused and all their energy is directed at making the next shot the best shot. That’s something for you to do as well.

Go ahead and get frustrated, but make sure that you’re not even approaching the next shot, until you’ve worked out exactly what happened the last time and correct any mistakes you think you need to correct. Was there anything you could’ve done differently? Did you execute your routine? Or, did everything go really well? The shot felt good, you struck the ball well, it just didn’t go your way. Whatever the frustration is, make sure that you do everything you can to get that out of your system. So when you get ready for your next shot, the last shot is long gone. Good luck.
